Website Migration Checklist: How to Migrate Without Losing SEO
A step-by-step website migration checklist: crawl, redirect map, metadata, schema and post-launch monitoring, so you change platforms without losing traffic.
Our website migration services move your site from WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, Drupal or a custom build to Webflow, Framer or Astro, with every URL, redirect and search signal mapped before anything goes live.
What you get
Every project is scoped to your goals, but these are the pieces you can count on.
Every indexable URL, title, meta description, canonical and schema block captured as a baseline before we touch anything.
Old URL to new URL for every page that has traffic or backlinks, tested as 301s on staging, not guessed on launch day.
Posts, case studies, authors and categories rebuilt as structured collections, with images re-optimised on the way in.
Titles, descriptions, Open Graph, structured data and sitemaps carried over and improved where they were weak.
DNS, SSL, robots.txt, sitemap submission and Search Console checks run in a fixed order, with a rollback plan ready.
We watch crawl errors, 404s and rankings for a month after launch and fix anything that slips.
Most migrations that go wrong fail in the same few places. URLs change and nobody writes redirects for them. Page titles and meta descriptions get left behind because they lived in a plugin. Blog posts move over but their images, alt text and internal links do not. Structured data disappears because the old theme generated it quietly. Then the site launches on a Friday, rankings slide over the next fortnight, and nobody can say which change caused it.
None of this is hard to prevent. It just needs to be planned before the new site is built, not discovered after it launches.
1. Crawl and baseline. We crawl your current site and pull the pages that matter from Search Console and analytics: the ones with traffic, rankings, conversions or backlinks. That list becomes the checklist the new site has to satisfy.
2. Map every URL. Each old URL gets a destination: the same path where possible, a new path with a 301 where the structure improves, or a deliberate retirement where a page no longer earns its place. Nothing is left to a catch-all redirect to the homepage.
3. Rebuild content as structured data. Blog posts, case studies, team members and resources become CMS collections with proper fields, not pasted HTML. This is where most of the long-term value comes from: your team can publish without breaking layouts, and every page gets consistent metadata.
4. Carry over and improve the SEO layer. Titles, descriptions, canonicals, Open Graph tags and schema are moved across, and fixed where they were thin or duplicated. We also check image sizes, heading structure and Core Web Vitals, since a migration is the cheapest moment to improve them.
5. Test on staging. Before DNS moves, we run the full redirect map against staging, crawl the new site for broken links and missing metadata, and compare it against the baseline from step one.
6. Launch and watch. Launch happens early in the week, in a fixed order, with a rollback plan. For the following 30 days we watch Search Console, fix stray 404s and check that your key pages hold their positions.
We are not tied to one platform, so the recommendation depends on your team:
Our Webflow vs. Astro comparison goes deeper on the trade-offs, and our SEO website migration checklist shows the steps we follow in more detail.
A faster site on a platform your team can actually use, every important URL still working, metadata and schema in better shape than before, and a month of monitoring to prove nothing slipped. You own the new site, the accounts and the content from day one.

Not if the migration is planned properly. Rankings drop when URLs change without redirects, when content or metadata goes missing, or when internal links break. We map every URL with traffic or backlinks to its new home, carry over metadata and schema, and test the redirects on staging before launch. A short wobble of a week or two is normal while Google recrawls; lasting losses come from skipped steps.
A full crawl and Search Console baseline, a URL-by-URL redirect map tested on staging, titles, descriptions, canonicals and schema carried across, internal links and images checked, a launch-day checklist with a rollback plan, and 30 days of ranking and crawl-error monitoring after go-live.
We regularly move sites off WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, Drupal and hand-coded builds. Destinations are Webflow, Framer, Astro or Next.js, chosen on the intro call based on who will edit the site and how much custom logic it needs.
A like-for-like migration of a 20–50 page marketing site usually takes 3–5 weeks. If you are redesigning at the same time, plan for 6–8 weeks. Large blogs or resource libraries add time for content mapping, which we scope in the proposal.
Yes. We export your existing content, clean it up and import it into structured CMS collections. Formatting, images, authors and categories are checked by hand after the import, because automated imports always miss something.
If the current design still works, migrate first and redesign later, because fewer moving parts makes ranking changes easier to diagnose. If the design is holding you back, doing both together saves a second round of QA. We will give you a straight recommendation on the call.
You get 30 days of launch support. We monitor Search Console for crawl errors and 404s, fix redirect gaps and check rankings for your key pages. After that you can move to a care plan or simply call us when you need something.
